The 7 Gifts of Business

10/28/2014

"A man's gift makes room for him And brings him before great men." ~ Proverbs 18:16
I am always on the hunt for new insights and revelation that God gives in relation to business and entrepreneurship. A few years ago Laurie Beth Jones wrote a powerful book entitled, Jesus, Entrepreneur: Using Ancient Wisdom and Life Your Dreams. But it wasn't until recently that I had the opportunity to read through this book and I ran across some powerful nuggets.

One of things that she writes about is the importance of Christians to share their gifts and talents in business, because their spiritual values bring something special and unique to the marketplace.

She also discusses the seven gifts that business brings to the world, including:
GIFT ONE: Dignity
The ability to create jobs that give people a sense of dignity and purpose, as well as a reason to get up in the morning, is one of the most important offerings of business.

GIFT TWO: Acknowledgment
Businesses ideally create an atmosphere where the gifts and talents of the people within them are recognized and rewarded. This recognition encourages people to grow.

GIFT THREE: Prosperity
Business helps create abundance for entire communities, bringing new levels of activity and prosperity to entire groups of people. If you’ve ever driven through a ghost town, you will recognize that where there is no commerce, entire communities dry up and die.

GIFT FOUR: Integrity
Businesses can survive only if they create value and deliver goods and services as promised, on time.

GIFT FIVE: Service
Businesses must constantly evaluate how they treat their customers. Successful businesses have a culture of service and respect that can elevate the self-esteem of everyone they encounter.

GIFT SIX: Community
Businesses create a community where people interact, and get to know and care for one another. In many instances, the workplace has become the village.

GIFT SEVEN: Challenge
Businesses constantly challenge people to stretch emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually, learning as they grow.
Christians in business should all be interested in bringing God's presence into the marketplace through your daily transactions and conversation. He wants to use you right where you spend most of your time everyday to demonstrate His love and grace to the people in your circle of influence. Don't miss the awesome opportunity to impact lives through the work that you do. You and your business are a gift to the world!

The Coming Wealth Transfer

10/24/2014

Comments

Picture
Many Christians often talk about the massive transfer of wealth that is mentioned in Proverbs 13:22 and other places in the Bible. However, I don't hear too many people describe how this transfer will take place.

Os Hillman, founder of Marketplace Leaders, provided a wonderful devotional today discussing what the Bible calls a transfer of wealth from the wicked to the righteous. He lists at least four types of transfers that will take place:
  1. Supernatural Transfer
  2. Power to Make Wealth
  3. Social Entrepreneurship
  4. Wealthy Individual "Conversions"

According to Os:
"The transfer of wealth is designed to accelerate God's activity on the earth, not to simply make believers wealthy. Pray that God uses your work life call to accelerate His Kingdom on earth. And pray that God raises up good stewards of wealth."

5 Activities to Crank Up Your Creativity

10/23/2014

Picture
Why does it seem that some people are more creative than others? Whether it’s art, music, design, poetry, etc., it’s like these things are so easy for certain people. Yet for others it seems like they don’t have a creative bone in their bodies.

Creativity is not simply an issue of nature (born with) vs. nurture (learned). It’s both. For some, creativity is a natural gift. For others it’s developed over time. In either case your creativity needs to be stimulated.

With the incredible mind that God has given us, His expectation is that we would use it more creatively than we often do. Furthermore, utilizing creativity is an important tool for implementing your dream.

Unfortunately, many people are intimidated by the thought of being creative so they don’t challenge themselves in this area. Interestingly, research supports the concept of “use it or lose it“, i.e. brain cells can die if they are not stimulated.

Well, it’s not as hard to stimulate your brain cells as you may think. You can “catalyze” your creativity using five easy activities:

  1. Initiate: Don’t wait to get hit in the head with a great idea. Pursue new ideas through interactions with conversations, social media, networking, books, museums, nature, etc.
  2. Imagine: Schedule time to brainstorm and write down random ideas. Also, keep a journal or voice recorder close by for when these thoughts come to you.
  3. Investigate: Explore subjects outside of your expertise or interest. You may find incredible ideas and concepts in unexpected places that you can transfer to your situation.
  4. Innovate: Don’t just think about it – try it! You never know what’s going to work if you never put anything new into action.
  5. Inspire: Share your ideas with others. You might be able to inspire someone else with something that didn’t seem so great to you. Also, they may be able to add something to your idea to complete it.

In order to continually stimulate your creativity, you need to intentionally venture outside of your daily routine. In fact, these types of activities should be part of your daily routine!

How do you catalyze your creativity? What is the most creative thing you have done lately to stimulate your imagination?

Leave a comment. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Pursue Your Vocation vs An Occupation

10/20/2014

Did you know that fewer than half  of American workers were satisfied with their jobs in 2013, according to a recent survey from the Conference Board? I believe one reason is that too many people have tried to fit their vocation into their occupation. What do I mean by that?

The origin of the word vocation is “spiritual calling.” I would venture to say that most people don’t feel very “spiritual” about their 9 to 5. Your vocation goes beyond the job you do everyday. Your true vocation is linked to your life purpose. Unfortunately, not enough people understand their life purpose or do what’s necessary to pursue to a career that becomes a reflection of that.

In a perfect world, of course, your occupation by default would be your vocation. But for most people that’s not the case. Many in the workforce are frustrated because they have a deep yet unfulfilled desire to do work they believe exemplifies and flows from their life purpose. Unfortunately, they don’t know how to make that a reality.

With a deeper understanding of vocation, you can make the shift from work frustration to fulfillment. If you’re looking for a way to transition from the mundane to the meaningful; from working just for the money to work that is purposeful and fulfilling, click here to learn more about a free resource that would be of great benefit to you.

Have you been able to find an occupation that closely aligns with your purpose? How did you do it? Looking forward to your comments.

Dream Rally for Jobs

10/14/2014

Whether we realize it or not, we are in the age of the "Entrepreneurial Economy". This doesn't mean everyone will be an entrepreneur. What it means is that every worker needs to approach the workforce with a new mindset. Along with a new mindset, workers will also need new transferable skills that will be sustainable in any work environment or economy. Every person is a personal enterprise who brings significant value to the marketplace. While that may be somewhat frightening for some, this new normal actually creates many opportunities for those who are willing and able to adapt and adjust.

That's why we're excited to host Dream Rally for Jobs in Suffolk, VA this Friday, October 17th at Gates of Heaven C.O.G.I.C. We will be restoring hope, igniting visions, and inspiring dreams of the unemployed, underemployed, and misemployed. If you have been unsuccessful in finding meaning work with a living wage or you know someone in that position please join us for this special event  beginning at 7:30 pm.

Stop the Insanity!

10/13/2014

Comments

Different day. Same results.

One definition of insanity is continually doing the same thing, but expecting different results. This applies to many people in their career pursuits. They put their dreams on hold while working at a job they don’t like, for people who don’t appreciate their talents, and for pay that doesn’t reflect their true value or contributions. Their hope is that “one day” they will be able to pursue what’s really in their hearts. Sadly, “one day” often never comes for the majority of people who live/work like this.

Since January 2008, millions of jobs had been lost. And although the unemployment rate has been dropping steadily, there are still millions of people stuck in the rut of underemployment or misemployment.
I’m wondering how many of these people continue to focus their attention on seeking jobs in places that are paying people less than they are worth. I’m wondering how many people are sending out hundreds of resumes, competing against hundreds (or thousands) of other applicants in the hopes that a recruiter or hiring manager will be able to sift through the embellishments and enhancements to see them for the wonderfully talented, uniquely qualified, and distinctly special individuals that they are.

So many people are searching for acceptance from a corporation without truly understanding or appreciating their own self worth. They are caught in an unending cycle of chasing something that only wants them for what they can produce versus who they are as individuals. In any other situation this type of relationship would be unacceptable. However, in career pursuits people tend to just accept this arrangement rather than pursuing a job/career path where their value is clearly recognized and highly appreciated.

Your Business Is God's Answer to Somebody's Prayer

10/1/2014

Comments

Picture
"Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear." ~ Isaiah 65:24
If you are walking closely with God, the ideas that you have for your business don’t originate from you. As Proverbs 8:12 instructs us, witty ideas and inventions come from God. He wants to use you and your business to bring solutions to your community, city, or industry that solve problems and change lives. Somebody is praying to God right now and needs what you have to offer. Don’t take lightly the ideas that He gives you and cast them off as wayside seed (Mark 4:15). Their blessing and yours is dependent upon you receiving and obeying was God is telling you to do through your business.

In order to bring the Kingdom of God from Heaven down to earth in a literal sense, we must utilize Holy Spirit-inspired entrepreneurial ideas to do good works, by turning spiritual truths into practical, holistic solutions that bring real, positive, and lasting change to people's lives. That is when the world will really see our lights shine brightly and glorify God in heaven!

So the question is what darkness (confusion) is your business designed to bring light (revelation) to? What disorder is your business designed to bring peace to? How effectively you can answer these questions is directly connected to understanding your calling in business and generating value for which you are compensated extremely well.
