A Dream Unfulfilled

1/21/2013

Today President Barack Obama celebrated his second inauguration as President of the United States. Many commentators have acknowledged the significance of the fact that his swearing-in ceremony is 150 years since the Emancipation Proclamation and 50 years since the March on Washington. This is definitely a time to reflect on the past, but even more importantly a time to rethink the future based on how we engage the problems of today.

I was listening a radio interview on NPR and the host asked her guest has Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s dream been fulfilled? I agreed with the guest when he answered that progress has been made, but his dream has not yet been fulfilled, especially when considering the focus of his messages in the latter years of his life. Poverty and war were two major topics that he hammered home in multiples speeches and writings.

This is probably my favorite quote of his, which relates to how we as Christians should confront poverty:
"The gospel at its best deals with the whole man, not only with his soul but also his body, not only his spiritual well-being but also his material well-being. A religion that professes a concern for the souls of men and is not equally concerned about the slums that damn them, the economic conditions that strangle them and the social conditions that cripple them is a dry-as-dust religion.”
As we also commemorate Dr. King’s birthday and the National Day of Service today in his honor, it's a time to celebrate, but definitely not a time to rest. There is much work still to be done.

This video describes some of the “revolutionary” ideas he had toward the end of his life, which is probably what ultimately got him killed. Watch and reflect...

The VERY BEST Resource for Christian Entrepreneurs

1/10/2013

Picture
"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." ~ John 14:26
It's interesting how Christians sometimes leave God out of the practical aspects of their business. The truth is God is just as concerned about your business as He is about all the other aspects of your life. One reason is because He can use your business as a platform for ministry, discipleship, and evangelism. Therefore, He wants to give you unique strategies to attract customers with great products and services, so that as your light shines brightly through business transactions, networking, and other transactions, they will see your great work and glorify God (Matthew 5:16).

Those strategies will often come straight from the Word of God. This is one of the things that's so incredible about the Bible. It's the VERY BEST resource for Christian entrepreneurs (and the Holy Spirit is your strategic competitive advantage in the marketplace). This ancient book of generationally transcendent wisdom is very applicable for 21st century business owners. Even when we evaluate what would be considered business best practices, I guarantee you that the core principle can be found in the Word of God. His wisdom is without boundaries!

We have come through the Middle Ages, Industrial Age, Technology Age, Information Age, and now I believe we are in the Entrepreneurial Age. Fortunately, the Bible is applicable across all ages, cultures, and business industries. And the Bible provides insights and principles to all the core essentials of successful businesses, including strategic planning, human resource management, communications, financial management, customer service, leadership development, marketing, innovation, and more.

So don't leave the Bible out of your business. Acknowledge God in all your ways, including all your business decisions, and He will guide you on profitable paths (Proverbs 3:5-6, Isaiah 48:17).

In fact if you are struggling with how to apply Biblical principles within your business operations we have an incredible opportunity for you coming next week, January 18-19. Dual Domination Business Boot Camp will provide you with spiritual and practical tools to building a thriving business and advance the Kingdom of God. You can attend live in San Diego or online by pay per view. Click the image below to learn more.

We Need to Unleash the World's Entrepreneurial Geniuses

1/8/2013

Comments

Picture
"I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions." Proverbs 8:12
CNN.com recently published an article We Need to Unleash the World's Entrepreneurial Geniuses, which promotes the idea that solutions to many of the world's problems could be solved by those who live right in those cities and communities. I have said for a long time that our society needs more social entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial thinkers to help conquer many of the immense challenges that we are confronted with on a daily basis. Here is an excerpt from the article...
"Entrepreneurship is a powerful engine that can propel the global agenda forward. It is a major tool for reducing poverty, improving social conditions and confronting environmental challenges. It empowers people and generates solutions that help communities overcome old problems with new ways of thinking. It is an important driver of economic development, job creation and expanding opportunities for women and youth."
This is a key motivator behind Kingdom Business University Business Incubator initiative, where we aspire to establish Christian business incubators in the U.S. and around the world. We believe entrepreneurs are born and made. We believe they comes from all walks of life and socio-economic backgrounds. Here is another excerpt from the article:
"They [entrepreneurs] could be immigrants who travel the globe searching for better opportunities for themselves and their families, entrepreneurs-to-be who could be breathing life into communities ripe for revitalization, or social entrepreneurs who find innovative solutions to social challenges and change the world for the better."
I love to imagine how entrepreneurial thinking can produce creative ideas and innovative solutions to challenges that many impoverished communities face nationally and globally. The potential for great things to happen is unleashed when entrepreneurs, who have incredible vision, diverse skills, and a passion for progress, channel their collective energy to create something greater than what one individual could do on their own. I am one of those entrepreneurs. Are you?

Personal Revolution vs New Year's Resolutions

1/2/2013

Comments

Picture
A recent study from University of Scranton's Journal of Clinical Psychology revealed that 92% of Americans who make New Year's resolutions are unsuccessful at achieving them. Further, those reporting having "infrequent success" was 49%, while 24% say they fail every year. Wow! I thought those numbers would be high, but not that high.

Are you in the boat of those who participate in the resolution ritual year after year and then fail to live up to the annual goals that you set? Well apparently according to that study you're not alone. The real issue is not about will power. You don't need any more will power to keep your resolutions. Instead you need a personal revolution - encompassing your mind, body, and spirit - to help you reach your peak potential where God created you to thrive.

I created this inspiring video a few years ago, but the message is still very relevant today. Enjoy!

Also read my previous blog, Instead of Making Resolutions, Dream, which advocates dreaming as a more productive alternative to resolutions.

In what ways are you dismissing New Year's resolutions in favor of a personal revolutions? Leave your comments below...

Instead of Making Resolutions, Dream

1/1/2013

Comments

While perusing the Internet today, I ran across this great article on Harvard Business Review blog that discussed effective ways to plan out your year. It's probably the first time I have heard someone invoke the concept of dreaming as an alternative to making resolutions. Here's an except from the article:
"While resolutions are about "shoulds," dreaming is about hope — and who we may become. Dreaming is at the heart of disruption — it is only when we dream that we can hope to create something truly new, something that will overtake old habits, old customs, and old ways of thinking and being. And we all know by now that a disruptive path leads to a greater measure of success."
In considering the benefit of dreaming over making resolutions I am reminded of Ephesians 3:20, which reads, "Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us." Dreams originated with God and He uses them as a divine tool to inspire and instruct us how to operate in life with intention and impact. Don't just settle for your resolutions. Engage the mind of Christ to direct your paths and order your steps in 2013.
