- Among all children under 18 years in the U.S., 43% live in low-income families and 21% —approximately 1 in 5 — lives in a poor family. This means that children represent 23% of the population but comprise 33% of all people in poverty.
- Growing up in poverty is associated with lower occupational status and lower wages, poorer health, and deficits in working memory in adulthood.
- The share of people ages 25 to 32 with only a high school diploma who are living in poverty has grown from 7% in 1979 to 22% in 2014.
- Unemployment rate for all teens ages 16 to 19 — currently more than 15% — is three times higher than the rate for workers ages 25 to 34.
- Unemployment rate for black teens was 25.7% — almost twice the 14.2% of white teens.
- Unemployment rate for black male teens ages 16 to 19 is more than twice the rate of their white counterparts, 32.3% vs. 13.9%, signifying constrained economic mobility for this demographic of workers.
- The experience of so many young people being unemployed is making millennials more risk-averse — and therefore less likely to start new businesses that would create future jobs.
