Stop the Insanity!

10/13/2014

Different day. Same results.

One definition of insanity is continually doing the same thing, but expecting different results. This applies to many people in their career pursuits. They put their dreams on hold while working at a job they don’t like, for people who don’t appreciate their talents, and for pay that doesn’t reflect their true value or contributions. Their hope is that “one day” they will be able to pursue what’s really in their hearts. Sadly, “one day” often never comes for the majority of people who live/work like this.

Since January 2008, millions of jobs had been lost. And although the unemployment rate has been dropping steadily, there are still millions of people stuck in the rut of underemployment or misemployment.
I’m wondering how many of these people continue to focus their attention on seeking jobs in places that are paying people less than they are worth. I’m wondering how many people are sending out hundreds of resumes, competing against hundreds (or thousands) of other applicants in the hopes that a recruiter or hiring manager will be able to sift through the embellishments and enhancements to see them for the wonderfully talented, uniquely qualified, and distinctly special individuals that they are.

So many people are searching for acceptance from a corporation without truly understanding or appreciating their own self worth. They are caught in an unending cycle of chasing something that only wants them for what they can produce versus who they are as individuals. In any other situation this type of relationship would be unacceptable. However, in career pursuits people tend to just accept this arrangement rather than pursuing a job/career path where their value is clearly recognized and highly appreciated.

Duck Dynasty Sees the Marketplace as a Mission Field

By now most people are familiar with Duck Dynasty and the Robertsons, who built a multi-million dollar sporting empire manufacturing duck calls in Monroe, Louisiana and according to A&E TV "have earned a seat in homes across the country with their special brand of downhome practicality, southern charm and sharp sense of humor." To me the best thing about this family is their opportunity to share Jesus with the world on a weekly basis.

The video below, featuring the patriarch of the family Phil Robertson, is a powerful example of how a life can be eternally changed that initiated from a simple business transaction. This Christian entrepreneur is having a Kingdom impact on their customers and others.

Many Christian entrepreneurs don't think they're qualified to preach because they don't stand in a pulpit on Sundays, but don't realize God has already given them a platform to shine from Monday through Friday in their business. If you want to have a great impact in the world, start right where you are and watch God work through you while you're at work!

How do you use your business as a platform to represent Jesus? Leave your comments below...

I love it when I have the opportunity to interview people who are diverse in their talents and using them in unique ways that glorify God. This Thursday on Passion in Action TV I have the privilege to interview Dr. Mark Williams, a board-certified ear, nose, and throat physician. In addition to his establishing his private surgical practice on the campus of Southern Hills Medical Center, he is also an adjunct assistant professor at Meharry Medical College and founded the Voice Care Center of Nashville, where he specializes in treating and preventing voice problems in Christian and Gospel music artists. As an independent gospel recording artist himself, Dr. Williams has a keen insight to not only the medical and surgical implications of voice disturbances, but also the many spiritual impacts.

You can learn more about this dynamic man of God and how he uses his talents in business and ministry this Thursday at 7 PM EST at www.passioninaction.tv. Don't forget to invite your friends. See you Thursday!

Is it Possible to Find a "Dream Job?"

8/14/2013

Comments

I changed the original theme for Thursday's episode of Passion in Action TV from "Find a Dream Job" to "Create a Dream Job." The main reason is because the more I thought about it, a bunch of "dream jobs" aren't just waiting to be found. If that's the case Millennials wouldn't be struggling so hard to find a job out of college. Did you know that, according to a May report in the New York Times, the U.S. has the highest rate of unemployed young adults (26.6%) between the ages twenty-five and thirty-four? This is higher than in other larger, wealthy economies, including those of France, Britain, Germany, Japan, and Canada. Further evidence of how difficult this job market is for Millennials and young minority adults: according to a Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data in 2012, 63 percent of 18- to 31-year-olds had jobs, down from the 70 percent of their counterparts who had jobs in 2007.
Picture
The truth is the job market hasn't just been difficult for Millennials and minorities to find basic jobs (let alone dream jobs), it's been hard on everyone. Fortunately, all is not lost. I believe God put the desire and capacity inside all of us to do meaningful work that is unique and fulfilling to how He designed each of us. The challenge is identifying where that work is.

That's why I'm excited about this week's show, because my special guest, Frank T. Mitchell, is a Human Resources and Talent Management expert who will share his perspectives and experience on how to create your dream job versus just hoping it exists somewhere. A recession can't stop God's blessings from getting to you!

Join us for this timely conversation Thursday at 7PM eastern on www.passioninaction.tv.

God at Work in You at Work

7/26/2013

Today is a great day! My good friend Charles Clark Jr. of Nebo Media Group celebrated the 4th anniversary edition of their online magazine BrothaOnline.com. And I'm extremely humbled and privileged to have an article in this edition. The focus of my Kingdom Business column for this issue is "God's Purposes at Work in You at Work" which focuses on how God wants to use your daily work environment to change you and the people around you. Here's a short excerpt:
Picture
It’s called the “Sunday Night Slog.” You know that period of time between when the glow from the Sunday service has long since worn off and the creeping dread of Monday morning has not yet completely arrived. You get that knot in your stomach, slight throb in your temple, and irritation in your attitude. The weekend is 98% over and the reality of another unfulfilling, frustrating, life-zapping week at your job is about to begin. It’s the precursor to the “Monday Blues.”

With all my heart I do not believe that God meant for your work life to look like or stay like this. As your Father’s child, you were created to thrive in the work that would bring you fulfillment and glory to God. Unfortunately, to most employed and unemployed Christians the concept of workplace bliss is completely foreign.

Grinding Should Lead to Growing!

5/6/2013

Comments

Picture
"All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty." Proverbs 14:23
I hear many people talk about being in the "grind" of life or they are "grinding" doing the work of building their business or career. Unfortunately most people talk more than they actually work, because you shouldn't be "grinding" year after year with minimal results to show for it. The truth is if you're grinding but not growing then you're just wasting your time.

Profitable grinding should result in character development not just the investment of time, sweat, and tears. Grinding should be making you stronger. You should be learning from your mistakes, not continually repeating past failures. Your knowledge and expertise should be expanding. Your wisdom should be increasing. Your efforts should become more efficient over time. Your plans should be more sound. You should be getting more disciplined. Grinding should be enhancing your value.

Don't use "grinding" as an excuse for complacency. Make sure you're getting better at what you do versus simply becoming an expert in unchanged mediocrity.

Breaking Away From an Unhealthy W-2 Dependency

4/5/2013

Comments

Picture
It seems like lately I have been increasingly running across articles on the Internet where people are encouraging company employees to quit their jobs. This is intriguing to me considering the U.S. is still in the middle of a "soft" economic recovery with jobs still being very difficult to come by for so many Americans. Is this a bunch of hubris or is there something to what all these people are saying?

The latest article I read, entitled Why You Should Quit Your Job Now, advocates that employees rethink their employment perspective by rejecting the notion that your current job is going to last a long time, while at the same time pursuing alternative streams of income. The author calls people who operate like this "entre-employees."

People who are in denial about the real state of the modern workforce have an unhealthy W-2 dependency, i.e. they can't see themselves as anything other than an employee who gets a "guaranteed"  check every 2 weeks. In essence they have "W-2 Dependency." Unfortunately for them, the typical 9 to 5 has been going the way of the dinosaurs for a long time, and I believe the pace is accelerating.

Did you know that temporary employees make up 20% - 30% of the current workforce? And some experts believe that number could increase to as high as 60% within the next 10 years. Corporations are driven to maximize profits by increasing income and decreasing expenses. Guess what the biggest expense is for most corporations? People. So guess where they are constantly looking to reduce their obligations? Temporary employees are much less expensive than full-time employees (mainly because they don't have to pay for their benefits) and much easier to transition in and out of the company based on project-type work.

(RELATED: RePurpose My Career: Success Skills for the Entrepreneurial Economy)

Position for Your Transition
It's not practical or wise for most people to just walk away from their jobs tomorrow. Instead, I encourage you to proactively prepare for your next career opportunity instead of hoping you won't be a corporate casualty. Here are three key aspects of creating an entrance plan into your next career venture:
  1. Identify Your Passion. What are your life goals? What is your dream career or business? What type of work do you want to do that requires no external motivation?
  2. Evaluate Your Professional Skills. What are you excellent at? What skills do you possess that others would consider you great? What are your transferable skills that you can utilize at any company?
  3. Create Your Plan. Expect the best, but prepare for the worst. Determine the relationships, revenues, and resources you need to have established prior to your transition. Plan your work and then work you plan.

In future articles I will offer more spiritual and practical advice on how you can continue to break away from W-2 dependency.
